Life in our mobile safari camp
Between long days in the saddle, home is our mobile safari camp: tents of our own home-made design, set up out in the wild.
Your tent
Our tents are comfortable and spacious, at 4 x 4 metres, with mosquito-netted doors and windows that let the air through but keep the insects out. Each tent has a carpet, towel rack, bedside table and water bottle, a bed with cotton linen and a solar light. Outside, a veranda with chairs and a washstand is shared with your tent partner.
Bush toilet and bucket shower
Each tent has its own bush toilet and bucket shower. The toilet is a traditional short drop with a nice wooden seat, and our motto is “Rhinos cover it, please do the same”: there is a small mound of earth and a trowel beside it for exactly that. The shower is a traditional, star-gazing canvas bucket.
Meals
Our professionally trained bush chefs create delicious and entertaining dishes. Breakfast is a traditional full English, served with juice and exotic African fruit. Lunch is enjoyed out in the wild under a shady tree, either brought by the back-up vehicle or carried in our saddlebags. Dinner is a three-course affair with a mix of local and international cuisine, newly baked bread, fresh salads and herbs.
Drinks are locally sourced, and a large variety comes along on safari.
The rhythm of the day
We aim for four to six hours in the saddle each day, with stops for drinks and a three-hour lunch break with time for a siesta. A book for that midday rest under a tree is one of the most useful things you can pack.
Sharing a tent
If you would rather not share, a single supplement of 90 USD per person per night applies, though this can be discussed depending on the route and the number of people on safari. We never mix sexes, and if there are odd numbers we do not charge the supplement. With the supplement you have your own sleeping tent but share the toilet and shower unit with another guest of the same sex.
