How experienced do you need to be for a horse safari in Tanzania?

Our safaris are adventurous horse safaris for fit, experienced riders. The rides can be demanding, with long hours in the saddle, varied terrain and, at times, a good pace. That is what makes them so special, and it is also why getting the rider level right matters so much.

What we mean by experienced

You need to be confident and able to control your horse (most are thoroughbred crosses) at varying speeds on diverse terrain, ride one-handed, rise to the trot, and hold a secure, balanced light seat out of the saddle while cantering and galloping over longer distances. A fit and proficient rider has a big advantage out on safari.

Why it matters

We ride in areas with predators and elephants, through open and broken country with steep riverbanks, thorn trees and ditches to negotiate. Safety always comes first, and every rider needs to be able to manage the terrain and the pace comfortably.

Fitness

We aim for four to six hours in the saddle a day, with stops for drinks and refreshments and a three-hour lunch break with time for a siesta. The terrain varies and some legs are done on foot, so good stamina in a hot climate makes a real difference.

Weight limit

Our maximum rider weight is strictly 85 kg (13.5 stone). Other arrangements may be possible subject to availability, but must be requested well in advance.

Our riding levels

Experienced: confident at all paces on almost any horse, competes or hunts seriously and can mount from the ground. This level is a must for the Kilimanjaro Elephant Ride and the Serengeti Migration Ride.

Intermediate: has ridden for a number of years and can control fit thoroughbreds at all paces.

Competent: can control a sensible, quiet horse at all paces and feels confident on such a horse; balanced in the saddle and able to rise to the trot.

Set departures and private safaris

On our set departures, guests ride together as a group and everyone has booked expecting an adventurous ride, so we cannot slow the standard pace for one rider. Private, tailor-made safaris are different: we can adjust the itinerary, pace and riding to suit you.

Not sure? Send us a video

If you are unsure about your level, send us a recent video of yourself riding. We are always happy to look at it and talk it through before you book.

Non-riding friends and family can join the adventure too, with vehicle, cycling and walking safaris as alternatives.
